TIDAL Rising: This Week’s 5 Artists To Watch

This week’s class of rising talent includes wistful EDM, hardcore Korean hip-hop and more.

TIDAL Rising is a dedicated showcase for today’s emerging and independent artists. Curated by the TIDAL Editors, Rising highlights artists just beginning to make waves. We’re continuously updating the Rising section’s album and track lists, but each week we highlight five special picks you really shouldn’t miss out on.

Artist: Petit Biscuit
Based In: Rouen, France
Sounds Like: Wistful EDM

Having just independently released his self-titled debut EP at the impressive age of 16, Petit Biscuit is one of the most talked about new names in the whirling world of electronic music. Decidedly downtempo, to the point that calling it EDM seems misleading, Petit Biscuit’s shimmering and wistful sensibilities, manifested perfectly on tracks like “Once Again,” place him firmly in the camp of Flume and artists of the like. Complete with tasteful guitar flourishes and high-pitched vocal blips, this is music primed for the end-of-summer blues. You can watch the music video for his “Sunset Lover” here.

Artist: Agust D
Based In: Daegu, South Korea
Sounds Like: Hardcore Korean Hip-Hop

Most widely known by his SUGA moniker as a member of Korean boy band BTS, Agust D is the pop star’s hardcore hip-hop alter-ego. Influenced by such acts as Lupe Fiasco, Desiigner and YG, Agust D released his eponymous debut EP last month. Prominently exhibiting an uncensored and entirely raw take on youth culture, virile tracks like “give it to me” demonstrate the sort of palpable emotive honestly previously unavailable to the part-time K-pop star. Put it this way: you don’t need to speak the language to feel this rising artist’s fire. You can watch the “give it to me” video here.

Artist: Sean Leon
Based In: Toronto, Canada
Sounds Like: Ominous Hip-Hop With Hints of Rock

A recording artist, visual artist, producer, director and entrepreneur, Sean Leon is a 25-year old rapper currently hailing from Toronto. Born in Scarborough and raised in the Toronto suburb of Ajax, Leon first made a splash with 2013’s Nineeleven, the Tragedy, a stunning, confident mixtape demonstrative of his new take on the Toronto sound, one that can be heard on such follow-up efforts as 2014’s King of the Wild Things. Leon’s tried, true and ominous take on hip-hop, enhanced by subtle hints of rock and roll, has us eagerly awaiting his forthcoming 2016 release, Black Sheep Nirvana.

Artist: Elise Davis
Based In: Nashville, TN
Sounds Like: Alternative Country Rock

Elise Davis is a 27-year old American singer/songwriter with a penchant for storytelling. Writing and releasing albums independently ever since she was but 12 years old, Davis first made her mark as a songwriter, winning American Songwriter and Martin Guitar’s prestigious “Pub Deal Contest” in 2013. On September 9, 2016, Davis released The Token, her stunning major label debut. A rich and highly personal sonic tapestry focusing on her path to the present, The Token is at the same time a steady rocking (“Benefits”), passionate (“The Token”) and honest (“Pretty Girl”) country-tinged record bound to make an impression.

Artist: QUIÑ
Based In: Los Angeles, CA
Sounds Like: Fantasy Soul

Based out of that city of angels known as Los Angeles, QUIÑ is an up-and-coming R&B/soul artist who describes her own sonic aura as “Fantasy Soul.” Drawing influence from such artists as Erykah Badu, St. Vincent, and Beyoncé, QUIÑ’s confidence is such that it radiates through her deliberately laid back tracks with an alluring effortlessness. If tracks like “LightSpeed” are any indication of what’s to come, we’re mighty excited for her debut EP, expected for release this fall.
