The Governors Ball: On History, Headliners and Winning Tickets

The Governors Ball: on history, headliners and how to win tickets.

Founded and launched in 2011, The Governors Ball Music Festival is an annual multi-day music festival hosted on Randall’s Island in New York City. Initially established and operated independently by Founders Entertainment, Gov Ball was just recently acquired by Live Nation in an agreement made so that the excellent festival might continue to “remain competitive and match the high costs of booking top talent for its events,” reports the New York Times.

Over the last six years, the New York festival has transformed from little more than a one day event featuring primarily underground artists into a three-day musical extravaganza to be reckoned with. Consistently chock-full of an eclectic mix of big league names, Gov Ball has quickly earned a seat at the table with the likes of Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Made In America, Sasquatch and otherwise.

One need look no further than this year’s headlining acts to understand the uniquely broad appeal of a festival like The Governors Ball. On Friday, June 3, The Strokes are scheduled and set to take the main stage. Serving as perhaps the preeminent indie rock representatives of the New York City music scene, The Strokes also headlined the festival in 2014 and are tried and true when it comes to putting on an energetic, guitar-driven show.

On Saturday, June 4, The Killers will make their Gov Ball debut, re-introducing the city to that larger than life, anthemic sound that garnered such ubiquitous mid-2000s mega-hits as “Mr. Brightside,” “All These Things That I’ve Done,” “Human” and many more.

And on Sunday, June 5, Kanye West returns to the mainstage, presumably performing much of his sublime Life of Pablo. Kanye first headlined the Randall’s Island festival in 2013 amidst the release of Yeezus, then exhibiting his iconic penchant for impressively marrying high bravado and high art in a show not soon to be forgotten by those of us in attendance. Put it this way: at Gov Ball, there’s something for everybody.

In anticipation of the sold-out festival, we at TIDAL have curated a playlist featuring some of the tracks that we’re most excited to see live in New York early this coming June. For an opportunity to win tickets to see Kanye and many others on Sunday, June 5, create your own Gov Ball playlist and share it via social media with the following designated hashtag: #TIDALXNYCGovBall. Be sure to check out the official rules here. Why shouldn’t you be the one to win? With a little luck, good fortune may love you the way that Kanye loves Kanye.
