This week’s Rising Artist of the Week is country singer Erin Rae. Based in Nashville, Rae, who has collaborated with the likes of Margo Price, Andrew Combs and former Civil Wars member, John Paul White, is known for her unique ability to put an ambient spin on traditional country music.
On the homely twangs found on her first full-length, Soon Enough, released in 2015, Rae aims to understand her past in order to fully embrace a bright future ahead. Rae builds on this in her critically acclaimed second album, Putting on Airs, released last month, Rae accomplishes quite the opposite of the title. It is a human document of growing into your own skin and understanding the essentials in life. Throughout the record, Rae’s songwriting is strengthened by her revelations that seemingly unveil themselves in the “open light” quality of the production. “Bad Mind” details her aunt’s branding as an “unfit mother” in the mid-‘90s by an Alabama court due to her sexuality and Erin’s own understanding of her sexuality.
After only two full-length albums in the bank, Rae crystallizes the sound of country music in 2018 into a challenging and thrilling experience. With so much more to explore with Erin in the years to come, we are happy to present an exclusive Q&A with Erin on Friday and an almost comprehensive playlist of country’s best emerging woman artists, exclusively curated by Rae.
