Sir Elton John (born Reginald Kenneth Dwight) is nothing short of one of the greatest living artists and songwriters today. Having mastered the piano an extremely young age, John quickly demonstrated his versatility as a composer, crafting Beatle-esque pop songs, glam rock hits, and soulful classical ballads with seeming effortlessness. His adaptability, combined with his melodic skills, dynamic charisma and flamboyant stage shows, made him one of the most popular artists of the ‘70s. And unlike many other contemporary pop stars, Elton John was able to carry on his popularity through the ‘80s, ‘90s and into the new millenium. He had a Top 40 hit every year between 1970 and 1996, and he’s shared successful duets with everyone from Aretha Franklin and George Michael to Luciano Pavarotti. He received an Oscar for his musical work on Disney’s The Lion King. In 1997 he released the best-selling single, "Candle In The Wind" in honor of his departed friend Princess Diana. His career has seen ups and downs - in creativity, sales, occasional slaughter among critics, enmity with his longtime co-lyricist, Bernie Taupin, public scandal and problems with addiction - but Elton has repeatedly landed with both feet on the ground. His songs remain remarkably popular, many of which are now rooted as pop standards in our common heritage. In this playlist we’ve collected all of Sir Elton’s Top 20 singles.
